A Different Type of Alcohol: Organic Beer

The first organic beer was created in 1980 in Muenster, Germany with the idea of wanting better quality barley malts. In ten short years, the trend of organic beer benefits has traveled all the way to America creating an eighty-million-dollar market by modern-day.

What are the standards for organic beer?

For a beer to be organic, it must meet the federal guidelines that state: At a minimum 95% of the ingredients have to be organic. This means no GMOs, synthetic fertilizers and or pesticides were used in creating the ingredients. Also, the brewery must prove that most (95%) of the ingredients are indeed organic and that the rest of the ingredients are not viable to have organically.

A little secret is that beers can use the saying “Made With Organic” if at least 70% of the ingredients are actually organic, which is a relatively lenient certification if you think about it. And finally, you can be 100 percent organic, which means exactly what it sounds like, all of the ingredients used no chemicals or pesticides to create the hops or the beer.

These labels seem a little unfair. As an average consumer, I would assume that organic beer is like one hundred percent organic, however, that isn’t the case since I would say the average consumer doesn’t understand the 95% threshold needed for the title. This is an argument for a different article, that is on a much more political platform.

Although organic beer is more expensive, it is still manufactured and consumed, at a rapidly increasing rate nonetheless. Some people care about the environmental impact that synthetic fertilizers have, or are concerned with their own health and want to eat or drink as healthy as possible.

Some people say that organic beer is a win-win since it creates less chemicals that run off of fields and contaminate water sources and that organic beer leads to a better fermentation, therefore a better tasting beer.

There are lots of different groups that have very strong beliefs about organic beer. And of course, some people just enjoy organic beer more due to the different taste and ideology behind it.

Why local farming is important?

Some people believe that organic beer isn’t about any of this, but rather than the beer and people behind the beer. Organic brewers tend to support local farms and in turn local communities.

Organic beer has almost a cult follower, where it seems like if you take one sip, you will be sucked into the community of it. Some of these organic brewers genuinely care about the quality of their beer and want to create the best society and beer combination as possible. They value a good product over a profit margin.

Most people say that it’s about the flavor. Everywhere in the world and online, people rave about how much better organic beer is compared to normal beer.

Organic beer is produced by farming methods that rely to a large extent on locally available resources

Climate change and environment

Specifically, some consumers and producers are very concerned about where the future is heading especially considering the epidemic of climate change. Lots of people want more sustainable practices, such as organic farming, as it is much more renewable and sustainable.

The soil stays healthier for a longer amount of time and with the dangerous chemicals, the soil erodes at a relatively alarming rate. It is important that individuals, even organic beer manufacturers manage their land effectively to prevent overall deterioration of the environment.

This is because climate change is a serious problem and farmland, specifically, unsustainable farmland is one of the largest contributors to climate change.

Organic beer benefits

It’s about the health of the people drinking it. Drinking a normal beer will expose you, in small amounts granted, to the dangerous chemicals used in the farming of GMO hops. Organic beer helps fix that as toxic chemicals are not used in the production of organic hops, therefore the toxic chemicals will never reach you, the end consumer, not even in trace quantities. Without these toxic chemicals, your liver will be healthier in the long run as it won’t have to filter out the unnatural chemicals. Standard alcohol is a lot harsher on your liver than organic alcohol.

In general, you should always consider organic food if your personal health is important to you. Although many people say that organic food tastes better, it has been scientifically proven that organic food has more important nutrients and vitamins.

Beer

In a similar way, it was shown that organic foods also have more compounds that fight cancer than non-organic food, so the likelihood of you contracting cancer goes down with the more organic intake you have. All of these facts are all true for organic beer compared to the usual beer, beer is a food!

Looking specifically at the health benefits of organic beer will give you an interesting story. The beer being organic doesn’t necessarily mean it has superpowers and will cure all of your problems. This is because beer is beer. So the problems and benefits associated with beer are also associated with organic beer.

Some people say that beer can help slow or even delay aging as the vitamins within beer is crucial for maintaining healthy skin. In a very similar manner, it can prevent dementia as it gives good cholesterol and therefore can reduce cardiovascular diseases.

Studies also have associated a moderate beer consumption to the lower chance of diabetes and reduce the risk of heart attacks. So perhaps if you would like to improve your overall health you should maybe drink some beer or specifically organic beer for the other benefits.

Also, beer has a large amount of silicon, which is important for building bones. Silicon can also help prevent bone diseases such as osteoporosis.

What about alcohol?

Alcohol can be harmful as it can cause obesity, as it has zero nutritional value, but still carrying a lot of calories, and can cause addiction, which can be a serious problem.

Also in general, beer can help you destress and sleep better, as who doesn’t love a cold beer. As with the standard beer, alcohol can be okay as long as it is consumed in moderation.

Make a healthier choice today!

With all of that being said, some people do declare that there are some benefits of having organic beer compared to the usual beer. Mentioned before, organic beer is a lot easier and safer to digest. This is due to the dangerous toxin used to grow GMO are not in the organic variant of beer.

Therefore digestion works a lot faster as it doesn’t have to deal with the chemicals. It is also said that organic beer has a lot of vitamin B6 which is crucial for your wellbeing.

So now you know a little something about organic beer. Organic beer has a really fun community and I heavily suggest trying to find a local organic brewery and checking it out.
